Egremont Castle Ruins and War Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

Egremont, nestled along the banks of the River Ehen, is a historic market town with a rich industrial legacy encompassing dyeing, weaving, and iron ore mining.

Positioned at the base of Uldale Valley and Dent Fell, the town is characterised by a broad Main Street extending into the vibrant market square.

Remnants of the 12th-century Norman castle can be found near the market place at the southern end of Main Street.

Today, Egremont's economic landscape is anchored in the nuclear industry centered around Sellafield.

It lies on NCN 72, Hadrian's Cycleway.

The Gather Café

Highlight • Cafe

The Gather is a very comfortable & welcoming cafe, shop and exhibition space. It’s staffed by volunteers and run as a not-for-profit community resource. Places like this can help to keep tiny villages alive as functioning communities instead of just des-res dormitories for the wealthy. If you’re visiting Ennerdale Water, make sure you stop in at The Gather for your lunch, and make a real contribution to keeping Lake District communities alive.

Kinniside Stone Circle

Highlight • Natural Monument

This is a reconstructed stone circle, consisting of twelve small granite stones. It is unlikely that the stones are the originals, which were thought to have been used by local farmers for gate posts during the 18th century. In 1925, Doctor Quine of Frizington set about restoring the site to its former glory.
