A classic country pub with two roaring log fires, a beer garden, fine ales and traditional pub grub. If you've taken your hound for a jaunt in the surrounding fells, you're in luck: the owners actively encourage you to bring your dog. If staying overnight in Ennerdale, the pub has three spacious en-suite rooms.

The Gather Café

Highlight • Cafe

The Gather is a very comfortable & welcoming cafe, shop and exhibition space. It’s staffed by volunteers and run as a not-for-profit community resource. Places like this can help to keep tiny villages alive as functioning communities instead of just des-res dormitories for the wealthy. If you’re visiting Ennerdale Water, make sure you stop in at The Gather for your lunch, and make a real contribution to keeping Lake District communities alive.

Egremont Castle Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Constructed in 1120 for the Norman baron William de Meschines, Egremont Castle fell into disuse in the late 16th century. Today all that is left is an abandoned ruin, which stands tall above the River Ehen. The large stone wall at the end of the outer bailey would have formed part of the great hall. It is on public land and is free to access.

Egremont Castle Ruins and War Memorial

Highlight • Historical Site

Egremont, nestled along the banks of the River Ehen, is a historic market town with a rich industrial legacy encompassing dyeing, weaving, and iron ore mining.

Positioned at the base of Uldale Valley and Dent Fell, the town is characterised by a broad Main Street extending into the vibrant market square.

Remnants of the 12th-century Norman castle can be found near the market place at the southern end of Main Street.

Today, Egremont's economic landscape is anchored in the nuclear industry centered around Sellafield.

It lies on NCN 72, Hadrian's Cycleway.
