Howick Village

Highlight • Settlement

The signposts for NCN1 'bypass' the village of Howick, but it's worth cutting the corner to pass through this tiny hamlet of a few houses. The gardens are neat and tidy, and it's just lovely (and you're past it in 10 or 15 seconds!)

Bench With Sea View

Highlight • Structure

This section of NCN1 is a minor road which runs very close to the coast, with the coastal footpath alongside. There's a little dip just here, with a ramshackle bench - perfect for a short stop!

Long Heugh Limestone Escarpment

Highlight • Natural Monument

The towering rock faces and impressive cliffs along this part of the route are uniquely beautiful. Surrounded by green countryside, sheep graze in the meadows at the feet of the rocks. Bear in mind that the path here can become muddy after rain so you may need to push or lift your bike at times.

The Arch Café

Highlight • Cafe

This is now called the Arch Cafe. Food is great, good selection, service excellent. Indoor and outdoor seating. Also has a little gift shop. Recommended (had been open on Sundays but back to the opening times in 51m post)

Craster Tower Gateway

Highlight • Cycleway

Craster Tower Gateway is an 18th century gateway and iconic entrance to the village of Craster.

The gateway once belonged to Craster Tower, which now serves as a luxury apartment.

The arch makes a wonderful photo opportunity and is positioned on NCN 1, a long distance cycling route along the east coast of Britain.

Craster Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

Small fishing village famous for its traditionally smoked kippers. A good starting point for hikes to the North and South along the coast, including a short walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. The Jolly Fisherman pub is a great stop, with good beer and food.

Eleanor's Byre

Highlight • Cafe

Lovely gift shop with a cafe serving hot drinks and a small selection of cakes.

There's only a few tables so probably best as a takeaway stop if you are cycling past.
