View of Darwen Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

What a brilliant viewpoint this is. There is a perfectly placed bench, to sit and take in the views. Worth the 10 min detour before you head onto the path to Darwen Tower.

Darwen Tower (Jubilee Tower)

Highlight • Monument

Built in 1898 to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, Darwen Tower (often referred to as Jubilee Tower) stands proud at 85 feet (26 m) in height on top of Darwen Hill, which is already 1,220 feet (372 m) above sea level.

It is a popular objective for hikers, which is fitting because it was also built to celebrate a victory in the local people's fight to gain access to the moorland. There's an internal staircase that allows walkers to climb the tower.

From the very top, the views are unsurprisingly stupendous. On a clear day, the mountains of the Lake District can be seen, as well as Morecambe Bay, Blackpool Tower, the Isle of Man and North Wales. Of course, closer at hand stretch the wild moorlands of the West Pennines.

Roddlesworth Woods

Highlight • River

Roddlesworth is a beautiful woodland that truly comes to life in spring and summer. Wild flowers here include lesser celandine, golden saxifrage and red campion, while bluebells also flourish. Chaffinches and grey wagtails are among the birdlife that can be spotted among the trees.

It's a glorious place to seek out for a peaceful ramble. There are myriad trails that explore the woodland and the reservoirs to the north. If you fancy something more strenuous, you can link the woods with a hike up to Darwen Tower on the high moors.

Hollinshead Hall Ruins and Well House

Highlight • Historical Site

The wellhouse is the last building standing of what was once the manor house of Tockholes: Hollinshead Hall. The ruins of the 18th-century hall, farm and stables are also found here, demolished by the Liverpool Corporation in 1911. The reputedly haunted wellhouse is at the meeting point of five springs, which are also said to have healing properties.
