Seacombe Cliffs and Quarry

Highlight • Natural

From the 1770s these rock outcrops were good for ashlar, dressings and carving. In the accounts for 1771 William Chinchin dug 418 tons of ashlar or front stone, 101 tons of backing stone, 7 sets of caps and legs ( i.e. saddle stones to support granaries) and 1 ton for agricultural rollers. In the 1809-1811 accounts Seacombe is recorded as the place where stone was loaded onto boats for export "May 6th- June 3rd Chinchen Bower to Henry Bankes Esq for ground of stone shipped from Seacombe Quarry œ1-1s-10d".

The Dorset Quarry Company ran the quarry until the early 1930s

As a curiosity, you'll notice that the two radar dishes also resemble a large fire basket. This was done as a reference to the practice of lighting beacons to warn of the Spanish Armada.

St Aldhelm's Head Radar Memorial

Highlight • Monument

For a number of years there were various discussions about ways to commemorate the pioneering work on radar undertaken at Worth Matravers during World War II. Towards the end of the 1990s Tony Viney, a Worth resident and parish councillor, progressed proposals through the Worth Parish Council to erect a radar memorial at St Aldhelm's Head. Tony Viney, himself a local sculptor, also designed the memorial.

The stainless steel memorial is set on a Purbeck stone plinth. It represents two radar dishes which are arranged in such a way that they also form a large fire basket. This reflects both ancient and modern methods to warn of invasion: fires were lit as beacons to warn of the Spanish armada while radar forms the modern equivalent.
