Over Bridge (River Severn, NCN Route 45)

Highlight • Bridge

Ace, traffic-free trail. A nice break from some of the surrounding roads. :)

Gloucester Docks

Highlight • Monument

The Gloucester Docks would once have been a bustling hub for transporting goods to and from Gloucester along the River Severn. Today, the Victorian warehouses have been transformed into restaurants, pubs and shops.

You can learn more about the area's history at the National Waterways Museum. For more information about the docks, visit: gloucesterdocks.me.uk.

Gloucester Docks

Highlight • Rest Area

Beautiful restored area of Gloucester - perfect for a wander around in any weather. If you get peckish... check out the Toasty shop on the far side of the docks... they do Cadbury creme egg toasties. FURREAL!! And the guy who runs the place is bloomin lovely.

Gloucester Docks

Highlight • Settlement

Forget what Komoot says about the track between here and Elmore... it is pristine gravel or paving and very smooth. There's only one 100 yard stretch where it's a bit muddy, otherwise it can be done on any bike at any time of year.

Lightvessel LV14 SULA

Highlight • Monument

LV14 SULA is a nationally registered historic Lightvessel commissioned by the Humber Conservancy Board in 1959. Stationed on the Humber Estuary for 26 years until being decommissioned in 1985, for the past 12 years, SULA has been moored at Gloucester Docks.

Currently being restored by her new owners, SULA's unique Fresnel lens was lit for the first time in 20 years on 5 November 2020.

Gloucester Docks Canal Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

Apart from one very short (slightly muddy) section near the marina (100 yards), this section of the towpath is absolutely pristine and joy to ride on. It is by far the most enjoyable way into the centre of Gloucester and is possible on any bike. A lack of traffic is however more than compensated by pedestrians, so it's not really the way to go if speed is your aim.

11.5 km

At the next bridge heading away from Gloucester I would suggest following the road. The tow path is really only designed for MTB's and walkers. Although I managed it on a road bike, it was bone dry and the grass was short.

Over Bridge

Highlight • Monument

Built between 1825 and 1828 by Thomas Telford, this span is actually named Over Bridge. However, it's more well known as Telford's Bridge and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Closing to vehicular traffic in 1974, the bridge is now for pedestrians only.
