Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Nature Reserve is named after a cave that lies under Carreg Cadno's northern slopes. Translating as the Cave of the Black Spring, this is the deepest cave in the United Kingdom, reaching 901 feet (274.5 m) under the surface.

The nature reserve itself is a wild-feeling moorland landscape with many rocky outcrops. It enjoys splendid views of the region's peaceful countryside.

The reserve protects the wildlife that thrives in this unique environment. Bats and moths populate the caves, while above ground peregrines and red kites hunt in the sky. Early summer is a majestic time to explore here, when flowers like mountain everlasting, autumn gentian, mossy saxifrage and great burnet show off their colours.

Bizarre limestone paving, between which - as if they do not fit into this stone landscape - trees grow.
Very special and fascinating environment.

Nestled on the banks of the River Tawe, this 40-acre (16 ha) Victorian country park is managed by the Brecon Beacons National Park authority and contains the Grade II-listed Craig-y-Nos Castle. The Castle was once owned by legendary opera singer Andelina Patti, today this impressive building is a hotel.

There are a few other accommodation options in the surrounding area, making Craig-y-Nos an excellent base for exploring both the Black Mountain to the north and the Ogof Ffynnon Ddu Nature Reserve to the east. Closer by, the park’s gentle paths and picturesque lakes are a delight to explore.
