View of Loch Shiel from Glenfinnan House Hotel

Highlight • Lake

Best beer with a view over the loch. Bit pricey compared to your average pub, but the decor and the cosiness make up for it.

View of Loch Shiel

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you have a beautiful view of Loch Shiel, the 4th longest loch in Scotland. It is a freshwater lake, and has special protection given to it for the number of bird species resident here. Interestingly, the rugged peaks either side are seldom visited as none of them reach 'Munro status'.

View of Glenfinnan Viaduct

Highlight • Viewpoint

The stunning, 21-arched Glenfinnan Viaduct takes the West Highland Line across the River Finnan at a height of 100 feet (30 m). Built between 1897 and 1901, it overlooks the Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel. A spectacular site from the glen below, the Jacobite steam train makes regular crossings en route between Mallaig and Fort William. The viaduct became widely known from its starring role in the Hogwarts Express scenes in the Harry Potter films.

Glenfinnan Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

Built in 1901, the Glenfinnan Viaduct is probably most famous for its use in the Harry Potter Movie series. It is an impressive piece of engineering, made up of 21 large arches. Trains cross it regularly, connecting Fort William to Mallaig. For those keen to spot an iconic steam train crossing it a quick internet search will normally provide the most recent timetable.
