St. Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The Catholic Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury is a beautiful parish church built in the Gothic Revival style between 1874 and 1875. The church is located on the corner of Burgate and Canterbury Lane, opposite the famous Canterbury Cathedral. It is the only Roman Catholic church in Canterbury and contains the relics of Thomas Becket. The church was built on the site of a medieval chapel, of which the tower has been preserved. The interior of the church is richly decorated, including an impressive rose window above the altar and a baptismal font dating from 1865.

The ducking stool was used as a tool to determine if someone was a witch. Between 17th - 19th century they were commonly used throughout England and Scotland.

The witch would be placed on the stool and dunked into the water. If they drowned they were innocent and if they survived the drowning they were a witch and would then be killed.

However sometimes they just threw them in the water and see if they would drown.

Canterbury Cathedral

Highlight • Religious Site

Canterbury Cathedral is the most famous Christian structure in England. Founded in 597, the cathedral was rebuilt between 1070 and 1077 and then largely rebuilt again in the Gothic style following a fire in 1174. The cathedral is both a holy place and part of a World Heritage Site and is the most popular tourist attraction in the city. For opening times and more information, visit: canterbury-cathedral.org.

Westgate Towers

Highlight • Monument

A serene and peaceful part of the city, and yet somehow quite imposing as you cycle up to the massive stone gate. It's hard not to image the thousands of travellers who have approached these gates over hundreds of years. Enjoy the calm canal scene and watch the punters pass by.

May 5, 2025,🇬🇧🚐🌊🏰 GB-England - Kent: Canterbury ~ schöne typisch englische Innenstadt
Our first destination after a thankfully quiet ferry ride to Dover was Canterbury.
During our last stay, we only made a quick stop in the city and were eager to stroll through it again.
I don't remember if parking prices were this high before Brexit (in London and Edinburgh, yes, but in the smaller towns, I can't remember... 🤔), but …

A short detour on the way home: Canterbury is a beautiful old episcopal city and has its origins in Roman times. It is particularly famous for its imposing and venerable cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century. This is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and thus the centre of the Anglican Church.

Some old houses from the 1500s!

St. Martin's is the oldest church in the English-speaking world and is referred to as the mother church of Canterbury Cathedral. Part of the original building was from before the year 410.
