Lovers' Bridge, Dunster

Highlight • Bridge

Crossing the River Avill, you can observe this striking bridge at the foot of Dunster Castle. It was part of the enhancements of the castle grounds carried out in the 18th century.
You can find an informational plaque about this bridge next to Dunster Mill.

Gallox Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

Gallox Bridge is a fine example of a medieval packhorse bridge. First mentioned in a document of 1475, the bridge was used to transport wool across the River Avill to sell in the market town of Dunster. Wool was England’s chief export in the Middle Ages and a major source of the country’s wealth.

There are a few charming cottages in front of the bridge... And a fairly large parking lot

You can also sit inside, but it's really nice in the huge garden when the sun is shining. Always busy, but the cream tea is delicious and generous. The best place to sit is directly by the water.

Dunster Watermill

Highlight • Monument

Using the power of moving water to drive a mill wheel is an ancient invention of the human spirit of discovery, the origins of which can be traced back to times long past. Thanks to such a construction, human or animal muscle power could be easily replaced by the power of the natural elements through a watercourse - natural or artificially created - in order to grind grain into corn or press oil from fruit, for example.

There are essentially two different ways of driving watermills:

* Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or
* the water is guided above the wheel - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - and falls onto the blades; this type of construction is more efficient due to natural gravity.

What a place! ❤️
Once you've paid the entrance fee, you can explore the castle's enchanting gardens - I could spend many hours there. I particularly liked the mammoth trees and the section by the river with its romantic bridges. Even today in October there was still a lot of blossom - it is incredibly beautiful here!
