View of Bray Studios

Highlight • Monument

Bray Studios was a film and television facility at Bray, near Maidenhead, Berkshire, England. The model and miniature filming for the film Alien was shot there, as well as The Rocky Horror Picture Show. It is best known for its association with Hammer Film Productions and contained four stages, plus offices and workshops.

Hammer originally leased country houses in which to shoot films, until the company eventually purchased Down Place on the banks of the Thames near Bray. After using every room and angle in its films, it later enlarged the house into the Bray Studios complex. The last Hammer production made at Bray was The Mummy's Shroud, which wrapped on 21 October 1966. Hammer sold the studio in November 1970. Bray Studios continued to host television, film work and band rehearsals until around 2012. The site of Bray Studios is now undergoing a programme of redevelopment into a residential area under the current owner of the studio, who claimed for several years that there was no call for the studio any more, despite having refused a number of applications by productions to use the facilities. Following several planning applications, work began in late 2017; space previously occupied by the studio complex will see a new housing development, whilst Down Place itself is to be converted into luxury apartments.

St Mary Magdalene's Church, Boveney

Highlight • Religious Site

A church has been on the site since before the Norman conquest, but the fabric of the present church dates from the 12th century. Windows and the tower were added in the 15th century. The church was built to serve the bargemen working on the River Thames; there was a quay alongside the church but there are now no remains of this. It was a chapel of ease to St Peter's Church, Burnham. An attempt to make it into a separate parish in 1737 failed because sufficient endowment could not be raised. Probably in the middle of the 19th century, a dado of bricks was added to the exterior in an attempt to keep out damp, and in 1897 the window tracery was replaced.

Summerleaze Footbridge

Highlight • Bridge

The Summerleaze Footbridge is a footbridge across the River Thames in England linking Dorney, Buckinghamshire and Bray, Berkshire, and is located on the reach above Boveney Lock.

The footbridge was built as a gravel conveyor belt, taking gravel from the construction of Dorney Lake, a nearby purpose-built rowing lake, and takes its name "Summerleaze" from the firm who built it in 1996.
