South Phoenix Mine Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

Cornwall's World Heritage Site

In 2006 Cornwall and West Devon was declared a World Heritage Site because of the important role its mining history has played in metal extraction around the world.

There was a saying in the late 19th century: "If there's a hole in the ground, you'll find a Cornish man in it." When Cornwall's mines failed, men travelled the world in search of riches and engine houses very similar to the one pictured above can be found in places as far away as Mexico, South Africa and New Zealand.

The village of Minions exists thanks to mining. Before 1800 there was little here except a few farmhouses in the sheltered valleys. But in the 1830s copper was discovered beneath Caradon Hill and the area was soon flooded with miners from all over Cornwall.

Golitha Falls

Highlight • River

Golitha Falls is a pretty network of waterfalls and cascades along the River Fowey as it meanders through Draynes Wood on Bodmin Moor. Here, you will find craggy gorges, dramatic falls and enchanting wooded glades. The area is a designated National Nature Reserve and Site of Specific Scientific Interest. It is home to diverse wildlife and plants with 120 species of moss alone!

Flat Section in Cornwall National Landscape

Highlight (Segment) • Natural

If you're fed up with constantly going up and down hills this is the place to come. Although it isn't flat, it's a pretty consistent low gradient for the whole stretch

Jamaica Inn

Highlight • Pub

Surely Cornwall's most famous inn, this is the setting of Daphne Du Maurier's novel 'Jamaica Inn'. The pub is a Grade II-listed building and was built in the mid-18th century. It was a well known smugglers inn and is today quite a tourist destination. In the heart of Bodmin Moor, it certainly occupies an impressive position.

Snail's Pace Cafe

Highlight • Cafe

Great place to have lunch or an afternoon tea with both inside and outdoor seating. The cafe is open from 9:30am to 4pm and they also offer bike hire.

There is nothing much else to do at Wenfordbridge, but there is a pottery shop and gallery, though it wasn't open when I was there.
