Description
If you're looking for a quintessential Oregon Coast hiking experience that blends dramatic ocean views with lush forest, the Indian Beach – Indian Beach Trail loop from Ecola State Park is absolutely worth your time. This moderate 7.2-mile (11.6 km) hiking route packs in 1312 feet (400 metres) of elevation gain over an estimated 3 hours and 31 minutes, making it a rewarding workout for those seeking stunning coastal vistas without an all-day commitment.
What to expect on Indian Beach – Indian Beach Trail loop from Ecola State Park
The trail takes you on a journey through a truly "Jurassic Park-like" old-growth rainforest, where towering Sitka spruce trees and abundant ferns create an immersive, green canopy. As you navigate the mix of uphill and downhill sections, including some steep grades and switchbacks, panoramic ocean vistas frequently emerge through breaks in the trees. Keep an eye out for the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, affectionately known as "Terrible Tilly," perched offshore, and enjoy the dramatic sea stacks and a natural arch along the way. The path can be muddy, especially during wetter months, so prepare for exposed roots and a good workout.
Planning your visit
This loop is generally considered moderate, but its elevation changes mean a good level of fitness is beneficial. The trail was rerouted further inland after landslides, so you'll be on a well-established path. While Indian Beach can be accessed by car, starting your hike from Ecola Point offers a more rewarding experience. Be aware that the trail can be muddy, particularly in winter and spring, so comfortable, closed-toed shoes are highly recommended.
