Beautiful promenade with lots of flowers on the banks of the Main. Playground for children, barefoot path, nice little bars. We liked it here. 👍

Old Town of Veitshöchheim

Highlight • Historical Site

Of course we know the Rococo garden and of course the Main Franconia halls with the big events, like the "Carnival in Franconia". Quite independently, however, the place itself with its charming old town, the beautiful Main promenade and not to forget the gastronomy is always worth a visit!

St. Vitus Parish Church, Veitshöchheim

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Vitus is the Catholic parish church of Veitshöchheim.

A Romanesque church was built on the same site around 1200 and was protected by St. Vitus (Veit), whose name passed to the place. The tower has been preserved from this building.

The nave was replaced at the end of the 17th century by a rectangular hall church with a Gothic choir and representative facade. The portal front shows forms of the Roman Baroque.

The rich baroque furnishings include the high altar with the altarpiece of the St. Vitus Martyrdom, two side altars, pulpit, baptismal font and other figures of saints.

The church was built by the Würzburg prince-bishop Johann Gottfried von Guttenberg, whose coat of arms is placed above the main portal. At about the same time he had started the construction of Veitshöchheim Castle. The funds were provided by the St. Stephen's Monastery, to whose lands Veitshöchheim belonged until the secularization of 1803. St. Vitus was consecrated on July 17, 1691.

Kavaliersbau / Town Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

The previous building was the small real castle. The Würzburg court architect Balthasar Neumann created the plans for the two-storey cavalier building. Anselm Franz von Ingelheim, Prince-Bishop in the Diocese of Würzburg between 1746 and 1749, began building the cavalier in 1748 in order to be able to accommodate guests and staff appropriately. The castle of the Echter family, which stood here and was surrounded by a large moat, had to be demolished for this. The coat of arms of the Echter-Pappenheim family from 1592 can still be seen on the town hall wall today. The master masons of the cavalier building were Balthasar Trechsel, Johann Zengerlein and Michael Günther. Ingelheim's successor, Karl Philipp von Greiffenclau-Vollraths (1749-1754), completed the building during his tenure.

There was space in this building for cavaliers, for court chaplain and court medicus. A secret chancellery, a knight's room and a dining room were also located here.

From 1902 to 1968 the rooms were used as dormitories, teaching rooms and classrooms by the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture. The Kavaliersbau on Erwin-Vornberger-Platz has been the town hall of the Veitshöchheim community since 1972.
