St. John's Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The St. John's Church in the Lauenburgisch-Lübschen Krummesse is a brick Gothic village church. It is the church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Krummesse in the district of Holstein-Lübeck of the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The Johanniskirche was built from 1230 on the high bank of the Stecknitz, which was then expanded in the Middle Ages, first to the Stecknitz Canal and at the end of the 19th century to the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The oldest part of the church is its square chancel. This type of construction, typical of rural church building in Saxony-Lauenburg, is one of the main differences to the somewhat older Vizelin churches in the Holstein region north of Lübeck.
A special feature for comparable churches in Schleswig-Holstein is the two-aisled nave with three bays on two central pillars. The tower was added around 1400, so that the original outer portal has been the inner door ever since. The round arches of the tower windows are atypical for late Gothic. The interior of the church is predominantly baroque. The church has an impressive triumphal cross.
Around 1767 the organ was installed by Matthias Joachim Vogel. The instrument has 21 registers, which are distributed over two manuals and pedal. The polygonal central tower is adjoined by two two-storey flat fields, flanked on the sides by pointed towers. The richly profiled cornices are crowned by carvings, which also decorate the instrument on the sides in the form of so-called "organ ears". After the Marcussen and Kemper companies had exchanged some voices, Klaus Becker carried out a renovation in 1967. Almost half of the registers are still original, including the principal 8′ in the prospectus, whose labia are painted with gilded masks.
