So it is worth the walk completely from Langballigau (harbor) to Unewatt. The landscape of the Langballigau meanders through the deep valley. Cross the wet meadows via wooden planks, on the other side of the stream, the path runs along the Hanglaubwälder. In Unewatt you can visit the fishing museum. And because there are many places of interest to discover in the village, the unawatters have made a museum straight out of the village. A 1.7 km long circular route leads to museum islands in the village, which convey historical and interesting facts. There are also events in the tiny village with only 69 inhabitants. The cross-border work of art to commemorate the earlier interaction between bricks and coastal shipping on the Flensburg Fjord is a testimony to today's unlimited collaboration.
On the basis of a private initiative by the North Schleswig artist Arne Aabenhus, the monument was erected in 2003 by the Swedish sound artist Ulla Viotti on the banks of the Westerholz Förde.
The monument stands at the point where, for over 100 years, the bricks from Steensen's brickworks were loaded onto sailing ships over a bridge. It is a reminder of the heyday of brickworks around the Flensburg Fjord and of commercial sailing shipping to transport the bricks to the whole of the Baltic Sea area. Between 1850 and 1960, more than 50 brick factories produced the coveted, fired brick.
If the brickworks around Nybøl Noor (a northern branch of the Flensburg Fjord) were counted and the time frame was extended to the 15th century, there would have been over a hundred brickworks.
Today there are only a few left at Nybøl Noor. The "Cathrinesminde" (Danish: Cathrinesminde Teglvæerksmuseum) brickworks at Broager has been rebuilt as a commercial monument and can be visited.
The work of art corresponds to the memorial near Brunsnæs on the Danish side of the fjord.
