When the new main station opened in 1880, it was almost two kilometers from the city center. A horse-drawn bus had trouble climbing the inclines. The tramway, which went into operation in 1901, helped. It ran between the main train station and the cemetery on Plauener Straße. Like the power station that had been built a year earlier, the tram was owned by Siemens & Halske. In accordance with the contract, it became the property of the city in 1920.
