Lovely little village centre with lots of boutiques to browse and plenty of places to eat and drink - pubs, bars, cafes, takeaways, chippy etc, lock up your bikes and settle down on the grass with a picnic.

Sturt Pond Nature Reserve

Sturt Pond is a haven for swans, ducks, Brent geese, mallard, teal, shelduck & grebes. Two wooden bridges cross the stream which runs from Sturt Pond to the salt marshes. A hidden sanctuary for bird watchers is the Bird Hide that overlooks the Sturt Pond area of the extensive Keyhaven nature reserve.

The bird hide can be found at the end of the concealed metal gated path between the Lighthouse restaurant and the black council sheds.

Hurst Spit

Highlight • Beach

Not unlike Chesil Beach at Portland to the west, Hurst Spit is a shingle bank that stretches out into the sea. The spit extends towards the Isle of Wight, creating a narrow channel and marking the entrance to the Solent. As a result of its slender width, the channel is fast moving at any time other than slack tide. This also makes the end of the spit an excellent place for mackerel fishing.

Henry VIII had a fort built at the end of the spit, which still stands today and is called Hurst Castle. On the eastern side of the spit at the Keyhaven Saltmarshes, an important habitat for birds, plants and invertebrates. You can hike along the spit or catch a little ferry to the end from Keyhaven.

A small stream which runs from the nature reserve to the sea. By the bridge you'll always find a collection of Swans and Ducks that congregate on the edge of banks before the sea.
