Vejle Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The town hall is a striking, historic landmark in the center of Vejle. The current neo-Gothic brick building was constructed between 1878 and 1879 according to the designs of architect Carl Lendorf and later restored by the famous architect Martin Nyrop.
The current building is already the fourth town hall in the city's history.
The very first town hall from 1460 stood at Gammel Torv
and burned down in 1530. It is located on a historically significant site where a Dominican monastery stood in the Middle Ages.
A special feature is the town hall bell that rings daily. It is the same bell that called the monks of the monastery to mass in the Middle Ages.
It bears a Latin inscription, translated as:
"I call the living, I wake the dead".
On the first floor of the town hall is the city council's meeting room.
Furthermore, the building is an extremely popular venue for civil weddings due to its elegant halls and romantic ambiance.
The building is located directly on the lively pedestrian zone of the city on the Town Hall Square. Directly in front of the main entrance is a shallow, ground-level water fountain, which serves as a meeting point, especially in summer.

St. Nicolai Church (Vejle)

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Nicolai Church is Vejle's oldest church and was the city's only parish church until 1907. It belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran People's Church of Denmark.
The red brick building in the historicist style dates from the 19th century, although a church has been demonstrable at its location since the Middle Ages. An archaeological and tourist curiosity is the Iron Age bog body displayed in an oak coffin.

Vejle River

Highlight • River

At this point the river is crossed by Søndergade, which is part of Vejle's pedestrian street.

With almost 36 km from the source to the mouth, the Vejle Å is not one of Denmark's longest watercourses, but it is notable for running through one of the country's most characteristic tunnel valleys. The river rises at the southern end of Engelsholmsee. From Lake Engelsholm it runs 12 km in a south-southwest direction before it meets the tunnel valley at Tørskind. From here, Vejle Å runs along the foot of Vejle Ådal while following the last 20 km to Vejle, where it flows into Vejle Fjord.

Bølgen (The Wave) in Vejle

Highlight • Monument

The landmark of historic Vejle is the windmill, visible from afar, while the wave-shaped residential complex Bølgen next to the harbor is considered a new landmark. The town church of Sanct Nicolai dates back to the 13th century, but it was often rebuilt and today appears as a construction of the time around 1900. 1835 Haraldskær a bog body was found, which was initially considered the Viking Queen Gunnhild. It concerned however around a woman, which around the year 490 v. Chr. Had been executed. Her bog body can be seen in St. Nicholas Church in Vejle. The Old Town of Vejle is one of the worst preserved in Jutland, thanks to modernization in the spirit of the 20th century and adaptation to traffic. The location of the city at the end of the fjord between mostly wooded and sometimes exceptionally steep hills for Denmark is extremely beautiful.
