Zalongo Monument

Highlight • Monument

Near Preveza is the Zalongo mountain, a place with a sad past. By 1803, some villages in the Epirus region were resisting being conquered by the Ottoman army. But the need grew and so it was decided to enter into a peace agreement with the Turkish military leader Ali Pasha. However, this was not adhered to and instead of safe conduct, the mountain dwellers were ambushed. Seeing their husbands captured and tortured, the women took their children and, singing and dancing, jumped down the ravine to their deaths to escape Turkish captivity. The huge monument "Dance of Zalongo" was erected on Mount Zalongo in honor of the women and children, which is still seen today as a symbol of the Greek resistance.
A total of over 400 steps lead up to the mountain. But the effort is worth it. From up here you have a fantastic view of the Ionian Sea and the Pindos Mountains.
