Just off the Military Road above Glenmalure, you'll find this nice little cascade on the Ballyboy Brook. From here, it's just a short walk to the Glenmalure Lodge for accommodation and refreshments. A short way further north are the more impressive Coolalingo Waterfalls.

Bookey Bridge

The Bookey Bridge is more than a crossing; it is a monument to the idiosyncrasies of William Bookey, the then owner of the nearby Derrybawn House. He had this 12-meter-long granite arch bridge and 800 meters of new road built at his own expense to bypass the original Military Road. His goal? To create an uninterrupted lawn that ran from his country house down to the river. Look closely at the sides of the bridge. You will see circular holes of approx. 5 cm. These were drilled by the Irish army during World War II (The Emergency). They were intended for explosives to blow up the bridge immediately in the event of a German invasion.
