"Blechschmiede" Horgau memorial and information board

In the last year of the Second World War, a subcamp of the Dachau concentration camp was set up in a wooded area near Horgau under the cover name "Blechschmiede Horgau". The production facilities connected to the subcamp belonged to the "Waldwerk Horgau". After the bombing of nearby Augsburg, the wings for the Messerschmitt ME 262 fighter plane were manufactured here by concentration camp inmates under inhumane conditions. Even today, numerous ground foundations are a reminder of this dark past and are protected as a ground monument.
This ground monument was created in 2010 with the help of many voluntary helpers, the Augsburg-Land district youth association, teachers and students from the Neusäß secondary school, the municipality of Horgau, the Bavarian State Forests AöR, the cultural and homeland maintenance department of the Augsburg district and the working group for pre- and early history of the Heimatverein for recorded the district of Augsburg. The dimensions of the facility are visualized in the forest by wooden steles and two information boards inform visitors on the circular route about the history of this long-forgotten place.
