The dam supplies the Chemnitz and Zwickau area with drinking water. The dam was built between 1974 and 1987. To achieve this, the village of Muldenhammer and a few hamlets had to be relocated and a railway line had to be closed. With the steep Eibenstock line, Saxony lost its only standard-gauge railway, which could handle enormous gradients of up to 1:20.

Although the dam was only completed in 1984 and the entire system in 1987, the dam was put into operation in 1982. The test jam even began in 1980.
