Hohenwarte Dam

Highlight • Monument

This 75 meter high and 412 meter long dam was built between 1936 and 1942. This required 250 people to give up their homes - an entire village was flooded for construction. Today she gives you a wonderful view of the lake.

View of the Hohenwarte Reservoir

Highlight • Viewpoint

A great place with a very nice view of the dammed Saale.
It just makes me sad when places are or have been wiped out because of mining or, as here, a dam.

Highlight • Viewpoint

The upper basin is impressive; this is the only place where you can look out over the water from the upper basin.

Here nature and technology merge in an interesting way. Display boards provide information about the pumped storage power plant.

The equalization basin is almost a monumental structure. It lies like a huge basin in the landscape and can be completely circled by bike or on foot.

Eichicht Castle

Highlight • Castle

Schloss Eichicht is a palace complex with the address Schlossstraße 1 in the district of Eichicht in the municipality of Kaulsdorf in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia. It goes back to a medieval castle, which was built to protect the hallways and the passing road.
History:
In 1331, the builders of the Höhenburg, the lords of Eichhicht, were mentioned for the first time. The castle was first documented in 1383 as the seat of a Holbach zu Eichicht. For the year 1464 a castle chapel is handed down in writing.
When the castle came into the possession of the family of Beulwitz, a Thuringian noble family, is not known. It was probably destroyed in the Thirty Years War.
1696 took place a large-scale reconstruction of the castle, which indicates a year in a fireplace. In 1873 it was described as forfeited. After vacancy, the plant was restored from 1920 to 1923 to plans by Bodo Ebhardt by the Reisner family.
From 1945, the castle was after the expropriation of the owner public property and served first as a retirement home, then from 1948 to 1963 as a children's rest home and from 1963 to 1990 as an apprentice residence of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. From 1978 to 1984 various renovation work with roof repair, new windows and tower repair took place.
In the years 2000 to 2015, the castle was inhabited by Burkhard Berndt and Constanze Dölz and offered as a holiday home. In 2015 it was acquired by Max Buchholz (Wikipedia).

Kaulsdorf is located in southeastern Thuringia in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt directly in the Saale valley, at the entrance to the Thuringian Slate Mountains amidst a low mountain landscape with steep mountain slopes.
