Gottscheina Evangelical Parish Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The year of construction is unknown. A small window in the east wall suggests the Romanesque period. Written references to parishes date back to the beginning of the 15th century.[2] After Gottscheina and two neighboring villages came under the feudal rule of the University of Leipzig in 1438 as so-called university villages, the University appointed the pastor and also introduced the Reformation.

During the Thirty Years' War, the church was destroyed twice and rebuilt on the remains in the style of that period, which probably explains the survival of the medieval window.[3] In 1763, donations were used to purchase an organ by the Torgau organ builder Johann Christian Flemming. This was replaced in 1853 by the current one, built by the Eilenburg organ builder Nicolaus Schrickel.

The church around 1840
The church initially had no tower and even after a reconstruction in the classicist style in 1827 it only had a wooden roof turret, as the picture from 1840 shows. The current interior was created in the 1860s. In 1854, a tower was built on the west side according to plans by the architect Richard Füssel, which was rebuilt and raised to its current form in 1892 after a donation from the Leipzig machine manufacturer Karl Krause. Krause had married Emilie Polter (1835–1911), who came from Gottscheina, in the church in 1857. The population prevented the tower from being demolished in 1969 due to its dilapidated condition by donating money and providing work.
