The pilgrimage church is idyllically located in the middle of the vineyards above the Main. In the late Gothic church you can admire the wooden carved “Madonna in the Rosary” by Tilman Riemenschneider.

Volkach Market Square and Fountain

Highlight • Settlement

The wine town of Volkach is the center of the Mainschleife and looks back over more than 1,100 years of local history, all in the name of Frankenwein. Take a stroll through the market square with the historic town hall, stroll through the adjacent alleys and treat yourself to a good glass of local wine at the end of a hiking day.

Upper Gate, Volkach

Highlight • Monument

Volkach Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

The former administrative buildings are spread throughout the old town. Only the town hall at the front of the market square is still used by the city administration today. A town hall in Volkach has been documented since 1484, but it did not exist on the current site. Construction of the current building began in 1544. The town hall has undergone several renovations, including the addition of a double staircase in 1610. In the 20th century, it was also used as a school; today, it houses the town administration and the administrative community.

The architecture is influenced by the Renaissance. The town hall has three floors and a steep gable roof. A double flight of open staircase is above the pointed arched gateway. A half-timbered bay window crowns the building. At the rear, there is a stair tower. A major renovation in 1972 transformed the building and adapted it to the needs of the administration. The interior contains several oil paintings. Official portraits of the Würzburg prince-bishops can be found here.

We start at the ferry in Wipfeld and cross over to the other side of the Main. Easy to drive way to Volkach. Then we got lost a bit, but always nice.😁 Then on to the ferry to Nordheim, briefly jumped into the ice-cold Main and back to Volkach. In Fahr over-put and on the other side back to Wipfeld. …

Today we just drove up the Main. Through Volkach to Stammheim. There we stopped for lunch at the Ziegler winery and drank a glass of wine. So "settled in" in Stammheim. Then we went back to Sommerach. 😁🙋‍♀️🙋🏼‍♂️🚴‍♀️🚴‍♂️

Today was truly unsettled, a bit of everything, perfect for cycling. A rainy break at the farms in Volkach, a delicious Pinot Blanc, and a winemaker's pot 🍲. The northern loop to Wipfeld faced a strong headwind, which blew away the clouds ⛅️. The return trip via Vogelsburg was simply a must; a few more meters of elevation gain were …

Definitely stop off at the Zang winery in Escherndorf. The Federweißer was delicious.

It was supposed to be a long circular tour, but unfortunately, two ferries on the Main River were cancelled, so I had to go back. It was still a nice tour.
