Budweiser Gate

The Budějovická Gate (Budějovická brána) was built between 1598 and 1602 on a rocky outcrop above the Polečnicí River. It is the youngest and only surviving gate of the original medieval town fortifications. Together with the neighbouring buildings of the former St. Elisabeth Hospital, it forms a clear visual landmark when entering the town from the north side over the stone four-arch bridge. The gate was built by Petr Vok of Rosenberg, who donated it to the town in return for a promise to maintain it permanently. The architect was probably Dominico Benedetto Cometta of Eckthurn.

As part of the castle, the Cloak Bridge (Plášťový most), also known as the Cascade Bridge, connects the Upper Castle with the Baroque castle theater, the Fifth Courtyard and the castle garden. The lower corridor connects the Masquerade Hall with the castle theater, the upper corridor connects the castle picture gallery with the castle garden and continues to the Minorite Monastery on the Lateran. In the Middle Ages, a moat was dug here, which was spanned by a footbridge with a drawbridge. The Cloak Bridge was built here successively in 1686, 1707, 1748 and 1765. Duke Josef I Adam of Schwarzenberg was responsible for the baroque design.

On the Barber's Bridge (Lazebnický most), pedestrians can cross the Vltava between Latrán and the Old Town. The current form of the bridge dates from around the 1830s. The steel truss bridge stands on two stone pillars and a central pillar at the beginning of the Vltava Island. The walkway is made of wooden planks. In the middle of the bridge there is a statue of St. John of Nepomuk and a depiction of the crucifixion. In 1830, the previous bridge, a simple wooden footbridge, was badly damaged by vandals. This is why the new bridge had to be built. The Barber's Bridge is named after the nearby public bath on the Latrán side.
