Budweiser Gate

Highlight • Monument

The Budějovická Gate (Budějovická brána) was built between 1598 and 1602 on a rocky outcrop above the Polečnicí River. It is the youngest and only surviving gate of the original medieval town fortifications. Together with the neighbouring buildings of the former St. Elisabeth Hospital, it forms a clear visual landmark when entering the town from the north side over the stone four-arch bridge. The gate was built by Petr Vok of Rosenberg, who donated it to the town in return for a promise to maintain it permanently. The architect was probably Dominico Benedetto Cometta of Eckthurn.

As part of the castle, the Cloak Bridge (Plášťový most), also known as the Cascade Bridge, connects the Upper Castle with the Baroque castle theater, the Fifth Courtyard and the castle garden. The bridge consists of three floors with arches and columns, an open covered floor with sculptural decoration and three closed floors with two connecting corridors. The lower corridor connects the Masquerade Hall with the castle theater, the upper corridor connects the castle picture gallery with the castle garden and continues to the Minorite Monastery on the Lateran. In the Middle Ages, a moat was dug here, which was spanned by a footbridge with a drawbridge. The Cloak Bridge was built here successively in 1686, 1707, 1748 and 1765. Duke Josef I Adam of Schwarzenberg was responsible for the baroque design.

Bader Bridge and Castle Tower

Highlight • Bridge

On the Barber's Bridge (Lazebnický most), pedestrians can cross the Vltava between Latrán and the Old Town. The current form of the bridge dates from around the 1830s. The steel truss bridge stands on two stone pillars and a central pillar at the beginning of the Vltava Island. The walkway is made of wooden planks. In the middle of the bridge there is a statue of St. John of Nepomuk and a depiction of the crucifixion. In 1830, the previous bridge, a simple wooden footbridge, was badly damaged by vandals. This is why the new bridge had to be built. The Barber's Bridge is named after the nearby public bath on the Latrán side.

Unity Square (Náměstí Svorností) is the centre of the old town with the town hall from the 16th century and the Plague Column from 1716. Several buildings are decorated with stucco and paintings. The square layout of the square, the arrangement of the houses on its sides and the exits of the streets correspond essentially to the state from the time of the city's founding in the Middle Ages.

In 1843, a stone fountain was added to the Plague Column on Svornost Square, which dates back to 1716, to replace the demolished Renaissance fountain in the middle of the square. The Plague Column, with a statue of the Immaculate Virgin Mary and eight saints, patron saints of the city and protectors against the plague, is the work of the Prague Baroque sculptor Matěj Václav Jakel, and the costs were covered by Princess Marie Ernestina von Eggenberg. On the pedestals are statues of Saints Wenceslas, Vitus, John the Evangelist and Judas Tadeáš, and in the niches of the lower row are statues of Saints Roch, Francis Xavier, Sebestián and Cajetan.

Český Krumlov Castle

Highlight • Castle

Český Krumlov is a castle converted into a palace on a rocky outcrop above the left bank of the Vltava. With an area of more than six hectares, it is the second largest castle and palace complex in Bohemia (after Prague Castle). It is the most visited tourist destination in South Bohemia. In 1992, the entire historical complex of the castle and the urban surroundings were added to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List. The castle area is one of the largest in Central Europe in terms of area. It includes forty buildings and palace structures with five castle courtyards and the seven-hectare castle garden.
