Great Pond, Torgau

Highlight • Lake

At the end of the 15th century, the brothers Ernst and Albrecht von Sachsen had an artificial pond built near Torgau by decree from the Electorate of Saxony. It should be used for fish farming and thus supply the farm. During the fortress period, the Great Pond also served as a water reservoir for filling the moats. Today it is a dam and flood protection system and at the same time an important nature reserve and local recreation area. The Great Pond is still used for fish farming.

Then as now, the dam is filled with water from the Black Graben. The system also dams the Zinna flood (Red Ford). The Great Pond has an average depth of 1.34 meters and covers an area of 175 hectares. The barrier structure is a five meter high earthen dam.

The ferry connection in Belgern, which represents a short connection to Ostelbien, can look back on a long tradition. It was already mentioned in the 13th century and has had many owners and operators. The ferry transports everything from pedestrians and riders to trucks. It can carry up to 40 people and has a load capacity of up to 30 tons.

Elbe Gate of Hartenfels Castle

Highlight • Castle

Architecturally fantastic is this access to the interior of the castle from the Elbe side. It is located directly on the Elbe cycle path, although you have to overcome a few small steps. The portal is definitely worth seeing.

Hartenfels Castle

Highlight • Castle

Hartenfels Castle, steeped in history, is considered a masterpiece of the Renaissance, but it is not only a special place from an architectural point of view. History was also truly made here, because in the first half of the 16th century Torgau advanced to become the political center of the Reformation and Martin Luther personally inaugurated the castle chapel in 1544.

October 19, 2021,Elberadweg Dröschkau-Torgau und zurück
Today I went on a bike trip with my grandparents from the Dröschkau manor to Torgau. In the morning the weather was still quite pleasant.
The path is mostly off the road and mostly paved and very well signposted.
