The former summer dike used to ensure that the agricultural fields were not flooded during floods. However, in 2014, the dike was opened in two places as part of the “Living Rivers” project, so that the Urdenbach Old Rhine could reclaim nature. And this is very successful, as the breathtaking meadow landscape to the left and right of the well-developed hiking trail that now runs over the dike proves.

You will be accompanied here by a never-ending symphony of bird songs: swans, rust geese, gray herons, orioles and kingfishers have found a home in the Urdenbacher Kämpe and can be seen or heard from the various viewing points along the route. You can quickly forget that just a few kilometers away the center of North Rhine-Westphalia's second largest city with the longest bar in the world is waiting for visitors!

The fact that you can hike in the middle of nature in the Kämpe is thanks to a flood: the Rhine used to flow towards the Netherlands at this point. However, after a flood in 1374, it shifted its bed a few kilometers to the west, leaving only a small trickle that has marked the border of the Urdenbacher Kämpe ever since.

At this bridge you can once again enjoy the great view and then leave the old summer dike. Suddenly the landscape changes: Instead of the wet meadows your way leads from here over extensive fields and meadows. In the distance the house Bürgel is visible. There is the Biological Station including a Roman museum housed. Why Romans? Well, as early as the fourth century, the Romans built a fort on the area of Haus Bürgel. From this derives also the name of the area: Kämpe comes from Campus = the field.

On the road between Dusseldorf - Urdenbach and Baumberg lies directly the original Roman castle house Bürgel.
Today, the house is a museum temple. Furthermore, it is a biological station of the district Mettmann.
There is a beautiful landscaped cottage garden. In the fall is apple harvest.
There are occasional tours of the VHS.

The Urdenbacher Kämpe is a nature reserve in Düsseldorf. This old loop of the Rhine is often flooded. From the car park on the edge of Urdenbach, go over the bridge and then turn left into Stumpeweg.

Furthermore, the path leads to a dam that runs through the middle of the old Rhine loop. Right and left is jungle …

Up hui, below ugh ...
The sun laughed from the bright blue sky, down on the lonely human child who bravely struggled through the mud. 😁

The Urdenbacher Kämpe is simply fascinating and worthwhile in every season. And muddy shoes can be cleaned again afterwards. But what remains are the beautiful impressions, lots of vitamin D and the comforting feeling …
