Zschornaer Ponds Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

The road “through” the pond is freshly tarred. A real experience to drive through the pond landscape. At the southern end you can even buy fresh fish from the pond.

Zschorna Castle

Highlight • Castle

Zschorna and Dobra came into the possession of the von Schleinitz family in 1397. At that time, there was a moated castle in Zschorna. The von Schleinitz family bought the farms that still existed in Zschorna in 1488, had them torn down and built a farm with farm buildings and threshing houses. The large pond was also built during this time.

In 1537, Christoph von Petzschwitz built the Renaissance-style castle that still exists today on the foundations of the moated castle, as an inscription above the castle gate states.

Among the numerous castle owners in Zschorna, one of the best known and most famous was undoubtedly Wolf Dietrich Graf von Beichlingen, who was born there in 1665 and died in 1725.

In 1837, it was said that only a few rooms were still suitable for residential purposes and that large parts of the castle were used as a grain store. In 1848, it was sold to Baron von Sprenger. Four years later, the von Boxberg family acquired the property and, from 1853 onwards, began reconstruction and renovation work on the castle, which also included the addition of a side wing.

In 1945, Zschorna Castle was confiscated by the Soviets. Between 1947 and 1949, it served as a pioneer leader training centre and a recreation centre for the FDJ. Various fittings date from around 1975, and the room layout has been significantly changed as a result. [Source: Saxony's Castles]
