Peterspark Grünstadt

Highlight • Natural Monument

Where today the Peterspark invites you to linger, the northern core of Grünstadt was once located. In the 13th century, this grew together with the southern core of the settlement around the Martinskirche to form a unit. The park area was then the monastery courtyard and belonged to the Weißenburg monastery. It is described in detail in the Weißenburg document from the year 900. St. Peter's Church and the associated cemetery remained the religious center of Grünstadt into the 19th century. In 1819 the more than 1000-year-old church was demolished. Its bell could be saved and it still rings every quarter of an hour from the roof of the old town hall in the pedestrian zone.

The cemetery was closed in 1874 and Peterspark was laid out in its place. A number of very beautiful tombstones from the 18th century have survived to this day, some even with the guild signs to which the dead belonged. There is also a war memorial for the fallen of the former Imperial French Army in 1852 in the park. As well as another war memorial with the Bavarian lion for the fallen of 1870/71.

Peterspark was redesigned in 1949 according to plans by Grünstadt garden architect Michael Mappes. In addition to the Roman coffin from Grünstadt's "Röthe" district, there is another stone coffin from the district of Asselheim in the area.
