View of Lake Schaalsee from Zarrentin

Highlight • Viewpoint

From the lake promenade in Zarrentin you have fantastic views of the Schaalsee. You can bike here relaxed along the lake, but of course you have to be considerate of many passers-by - but it's still very worthwhile.

Fishing huts on Lake Schaalsee

Highlight • Structure

Chic cabins for boats and all sorts of other things for a nice weekend on the water.

The owners probably find the hiking trail along it a nuisance. But it's also a good place for cycling.

Zarrentin Abbey Church

Highlight • Religious Site

When Zarrentin was first mentioned in documents in 1194, it was already a German parish village. The Romanesque fieldstone and brick church in the diocese of Ratzeburg was a village church in the first half of the 13th century. The place and church were also mentioned together in the Ratzeburg tithe register in 1230. In 1227 Zarrentin came to the County of Schwerin. The Zarrentin Monastery was founded around 1250 as a Cistercian monastery. The parish church now also became a monastery church - as was the case with the Rehna Monastery in Rehna.

The Romanesque fieldstone masonry of the square choir dates from the 1230s/40s. Around 1300/10 the choir was raised with brickwork. The choir today has a flat ceiling. On the choir walls there are heavily restored, scenic wall paintings from the second half of the 14th century, which show Christ as judge of the world, the coronation of Mary, Cain and Abel, the sacrifice of Isaac and some saints.

In 1460, using parts of the old church with indulgences, the current Gothic nave was built from brick.

In 1552 the nunnery was abolished and the church was once again the town's parish church.

The west tower was not completed until 1672. The tower contains parts from the 13th and 14th centuries. The current upper floor of the tower dates from the 18th century and consists of a half-timbered construction that is boarded up on the west side. The small, square clock tower top was completed by an octagonal spire.

Former Inner German Border at Schönwalde

Highlight • Historical Site

It's almost impossible to imagine nowadays and yet it was like that. It's good that it is reminded here so that it is not forgotten.
