Danevirke-Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

The Danevirke Museum is entirely dedicated to Northern Europe's largest archaeological earth monument, the Danewerk. In the museum, you will learn all about the history of the Danewerk from its beginnings in the Migration Period to the time of the German-Danish Wars. The Danewerk was a massive border fortification consisting of ramparts, walls, and ditches – many traces of the rampart system are still recognizable in the landscape today. Since 2018, the Danewerk, along with the important Viking trading center of Haithabu, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Note: The Danevirke Museum is currently being completely rebuilt with a new exhibition and new outdoor facilities. The opening is planned for spring 2027. Construction work is also taking place in the Archaeological Park Dannewerk until the end of September 2026 to offer visitors an even better experience.

More information and opening hours can be found at danevirkemuseum.de/de
