Tiefurt Mill

Highlight • Historical Site

Early flour mill, then oil mill, last paper mill and until 1991 a cardboard factory. Today, the converted mill is a residential community for supervised and community living people. In addition to the residential complex are the mixing ball and the comb wheel of a Francis turbine from 1899.

The six-arch bridge is Weimar's largest bridge. The viaduct is 38 meters high and 152 meters long. For over 130 years, it spans the valley and is an important part of the railway line from Weimar to Jena.

The massive stone Sternbrücke (Star Bridge) lies directly in front of the east wing of the City Palace with its elaborate colonnade. It connected the palace grounds with the park along the Ilm River. The extension of the Sternbrücke is the Leibnizallee, which once led to the ducal hunting grounds. The bridge dates from the 17th century (built between 1654 and 1655) and has survived all fires and subsequent reconstructions of the neighboring Residenz Palace.

City Church of St. Peter and Paul (Herder Church)
City church rich in works of art
Together with the Herder House and Garden and the neighboring Old Gymnasium, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Classical Weimar". The origins of the City Church of St. Peter and Paul go back to the time when the city was founded. A separate parish was formed for the urban settlement, which was established around the middle of the 13th century. Martin Luther preached here at the time of the Reformation. The church got its current interior appearance after the Second World War, in which it was badly damaged.
It was re-consecrated in 1953. Thomas Mann also donated to the reconstruction - the prize money from the Goethe Prize, which he was awarded in Weimar in 1949. The church is richly decorated with works of art. In addition to the Cranach altar and the Luther triptych, there are numerous bronze and stone gravestones of members of the royal family.

St. James' Church, Weimar

Highlight • Religious Site

The church stands on the Jakobshügel, probably the oldest settlement area in Weimar.

As early as 1168, a pilgrimage church was consecrated at this site, as Weimar was a stop on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. The present building is a single-nave Baroque church, built in 1712/13 after the demolition of the dilapidated predecessor. The church tower is accessible. The former watchman's dwelling offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views over Weimar's old town.

Bauhaus Museum Weimar

Highlight • Historical Site

Bauhaus Museum Weimar
The Bauhaus Museum Weimar presents the treasures of the world's oldest Bauhaus collection. As a place for open encounters and discussions, it recalls the early phase of the most important design and art school of the 20th century and links its history with questions about the way we live today and tomorrow.
Minimalist and self-confident
Minimalist and yet self-confident, the new building invites you to visit and stay with its clear geometry and a generously designed forecourt. The cube with five levels is entered from the city side via a large foyer. Those who approach the Bauhaus Museum from the Weimarhallenpark enter the interior via a terrace.
Design icons and sensual experiences
The exhibition creates an appropriate presentation for one of the most important Bauhaus collections in the country, the world's oldest Bauhaus collection, the foundation of which was laid by Walter Gropius himself. The collection of the Klassik Stiftung Weimar today comprises 13,000 objects and documents, including the Ludwig collection on the history of design from the 18th to the 20th century. The treasures include the famous Wagenfeld lamp, the slatted chair by Marcel Breuer, the teapot by Marianne Brandt, ceramics by Theodor Bogler as well as works by Paul Klee, Peter Kehler and Lászlo Moholy-Nagy. The exhibition focuses on the design icons, but also on historical documents that have not been shown before.
