Lake Zeesen

Highlight • Lake

In some places on the lake, which is around one square kilometer in size, you can jump into the water for a refreshing swim. Otherwise, the shore area is often overgrown with reeds and offers a great habitat for many birds.

Zeesen Castle

Article from the BZ of October 30, 2004:

"Zeesen: The great actor Gustav Gründgens once resided here (played Mephisto in Faust in the 30s). But for many years his vacant building in Zeesen has been decaying. Now salvation is finally in sight – from none other than the former squatters!

Yesterday, ten o'clock: For the first time since 1999, the sealed-off 40,000 square meter estate on the Zeesen lake was reopened – for a unique encounter. Owners, former squatters, the mayor, and architects wanted to get an impression...

...and it was a very sad one: The castle has decayed into a ruin. Overgrowth on the grand staircase, broken windows, collapsed walls, a dilapidated roof, destroyed electrics and plumbing. "Best to tear it down," shouts a local resident. But precisely that is to be prevented. Because the great history of the once idyllic estate alone is worth preserving. It was built over 300 years ago by Elector Frederick III (1657-1713), later gifted to his son Frederick William I (the Soldier King). After multiple changes of ownership, Gustav Gründgens (1899-1963) bought it in 1934 for 58,000 Reichsmarks and lived here with his wife Marianne Hoppe (1909-2002). During GDR times it was a children's home, after reunification it was occupied by youths for ten years and then cleared out.

"Due to the structural condition, we haven't found any serious interested parties," says owner Manfred Wolff. Now, the former squatters, as the association "Splirtz", want to turn the castle into a cultural center. "Splirtz" spokesperson Anne Heese, 24: "We are looking for sponsors and have also applied for funding." Stefan Ludwig, 37, PDS, mayor of Königs Wusterhausen: "If the financing works out, it could be a good project."

As of today (June 2020), the construction of a senior residence is likely being discussed. Costs of several 10 million euros are involved. (Source: gemeinde-zeesen.de/info-zum-schlosz.html)
However, nothing has happened yet. Sad!!
