Rötstein Quarry of the Hölle Brickworks

Highlight • Structure

This quarry supplied raw brick material for the Hölle brickworks located below the B446. Nowadays there is a solar field on the property. The rock stratification that is still visible today belongs to the upper red sandstone. This rock becomes plastic with increased humidity. Under the weight of the overlying limestone layer, so-called red squeezes occur in wet years. This causes a certain instability of the edge of the plateau, which extends with interruptions to about Groß Lengden to the south. The reddish color is due to disperse hematite (Fe2O3 particles up to approx. 20 μm in size).

Hünstollen Observation Tower

The Hünstollen tower stands on the highest point of the Plessewald forest. In good weather, the tower offers a magnificent view of the western Harz Mountains and the Brocken.

Yesterday (January 4, 2021), I saw that the viewing platform was boarded up and the entire tower was also locked.

Update: The tower has reopened after renovations.

There used to be a small hut with refreshments here, but it was abandoned due to repeated vandalism.
