Stralsund is a great city. You can spend several days here without lying around in the sun or getting bored in any other way. The bridge to Rügen is clearly visible from here.

Sund Promenade

Highlight • Trail

This promenade stretches along the banks of the Strelasund from the Nassen Dreieck to the Schwedenschanze. The avenue has existed since 1926, but was called "Hindenburg-Ufer" from 1927 to 1945 because of a visit by Paul von Hindenburg in the same year. After the war, it was of course renamed "Ernst-Thälmann-Ufer", but has been known by its current name since 1990. The beautiful street is lined with such important buildings as the Hansa-Gymnasium Stralsund, the Hanse-Klinikum and the seaside bathing establishment.

Alter Markt Stralsund

Highlight • Historical Site

The Stralsund town hall is probably one of the most important and best known, secular buildings of the North German brick Gothic. His display wall with the seven pointed towers and the six star circles, whose silhouette falls towards the houses opposite (winter) or the pavement of the old market (summer) around noon, is unique. The Rostock town hall also had a Gothic brick display wall. However, this was covered so far by a baroque porch that only the seven towers of the original display wall are visible. The town hall is right next to the Nikolaikirche on the old market. It consists of two parallel, three-storey wings in the north-south direction, which were connected to each other by transverse structures on their narrow sides. The two wings, decorated with pointed arches, were built in the 13th century and form an inner courtyard with a colonnade, over which 1680 baroque galleries were built.
The transverse building on the south side also dates from the 13th century. The northern transverse building with its spacious arbor on the ground floor, a large hall above it and the wonderful brick display wall already mentioned was probably built at the beginning of the 15th century. A baroque portal with a Swedish coat of arms was built on the west side in the 18th century.

St. Nicholas Church, Stralsund

Highlight • Religious Site

"One of the most beautiful sacred buildings in northern Germany rises on the edge of the Old Market next to the town hall The church of St. Nikolai was first mentioned in the first Stralsund town book in 1276 and is therefore the oldest of the Stralsund parish churches Shortly after completion large parts of the hall church were demolished and The rebuilding of the church according to the French cathedral scheme began around 1270. From this time, the remains of a one-tower have been preserved in the twin tower, among others, on the granite base on the west side.
Due to its proximity to the administrative center, the town hall, St. Nikolai is considered the main church. Important council meetings were held in it, and envoys were also received here. However, she was given yet another function by which she is rightly regarded as the main church. Here the "bursprake" were read out, so the citizens were informed of important laws and ordinances.
In 1662, the Gothic spiers fell victim to a fire that emanated from St. James's Church. Five years later, the southern tower was given a baroque helmet, while the northern tower in 1687 could only be fitted with an emergency roof for financial reasons.

Despite the iconoclasm during the Reformation in 1525, the interior has largely been preserved. Restoration works characterize the following centuries. After destruction in the 2nd World War repair work took place in the years 1948 - 1954. The outer building was repaired in the years 1971 - 1981. Since 1980, the restoration works in the church interior. The largest object, the Buchholz organ, was restored to its original state from September 2003 to October 2006.
