Lüneburg Council Mill

Highlight • Monument

The Ratsmühle is in tourist hibernation, it doesn't deserve it. I rediscovered this area last year and am very impressed. Two old water towers (water art) from the middle of the 15th century still stand. One here at the Ratsmühle, the older one at the Abtsmühle (the gate to the "Brausebrücke").
I found two links that describe the development of this mill well:

kleiekotzer.com/page30.html
quadratlueneburg.de/ratsmuehle-getreide.html

This could change with the new “Museum Lüneburg” building, the conversion of the old Nordlandhalle and the proximity to the water tower.
This area was the dirty corner of Lüneburg's center. Thanks to the new buildings and renovations, this corner is getting a new look and is magical in the summer. The new “Museum Lüneburg” has a terrace where you can enjoy the whole thing with coffee and cake. It is now possible to walk around the whole thing again. Discover it yourself.

Everyone in Lüneburg is happy that this bridge is back. It took nine months to repair and caused major traffic chaos during that time. I really like it with its painted design, and it offers a way to reach the new housing development "Ilmenaugarten/An der Wittenberger Bahn" on foot or by bicycle. You also cross a weir and can enjoy a nice view along the drainage ditch from there. An information panel provides some historical details.

"Schröder's Garden" can be reached via Friedenstrasse when coming from the city center.

Lösegraben Weir, Lüneburg

Highlight • Structure

The drainage ditch is of enormous importance to Lüneburg, and the weir regulates the water level. During floods, the drainage ditch protects the city center from inundation. The drainage ditch has existed in its current form since 1874, based on the plans of the city architect, Maske.

The weir can also be used to drain the Ilmenau River in Lüneburg to maintain the waterways of the Ratsmühle, Abtsmühle, and Lüner Mühle mills. It's also used to remove trash.

An article in the Hamburger Abendblatt describes this quite well:

abendblatt.de/region/lueneburg/article107936738/Lueneburg-seit-1874-nicht-ueberflutet.html

During my research, I also discovered that the weir needs to be renovated:

Schroedersgarten on the Ilmenau

Highlight • Restaurant

Rustic garden restaurant in the middle of Lüneburg with beach chairs and boat rentals directly on the Illmenau. There is a great playground for kids. In rainy weather there are plenty of umbrellas to put under... actually a tip for any weather! There is also a winter garden for fresh air fans.
Getting there: My favorite is by canoe (tour from Bienenbüttel and with a get-out and a well-deserved after-work beer at Schröders), by bike - is right on the Illmenau cycle path or on foot - just a short walk from the train station or downtown Lüneburg.
