Klaus Garten Memorial Stele

Highlight • Monument

On August 17, 1965, he went to Teltow to search for an accident vehicle there. When there was no chance of success, Klaus Garten decided to leave the GDR. He went to the Teltow district Seehof, whom he knew from his army time. There he climbed about 21 clock over the rear fence of the border installations. He was discovered by a border guard 200 meters away, who fired three shots at the fugitive and hit him in the thigh. A group of border guards found him later lying in the motor-trench of the border. In order to prevent a discovery by West Berlin policemen present, they did not take Klaus Garten to a hospital, but also hid themselves. At around 21.50, they transported him wrapped in a tarpaulin, and thus not visible to West Berliners. Finally, they brought the provisionally connected to the one-hour detention hospital of the Ministry of State Security in Hohenschönhausen. There he succumbed to his injuries due to the high blood loss the next day.

Teltow Canal Riverside Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The cycle and footpath on the banks of the Teltow Canal runs along the old route of the former tow train. The tow locomotives used to pull the barges through the canal from the shore. From the path you have a nice view of the canal.

You will find the stele on Mauerweg in Teltow, opposite the junction of the Zehlendorf branch canal in the Teltow Canal. The stele also commemorates the death of Roland Hoff, who was shot in the back near border guards. The border guardsman Günter Seling was shot in the surveillance of his comrades at the barriers from Teltow to Zehlendorf on 29 September 1962. He died a day later of his gunshot wounds. He was 22 years old. The shooters were given no extra days off and no other honors, as was customary on other death shots.
