Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit, Gunzenhausen

Highlight • Religious Site

Another place of worship in our parish - rented to us by the municipal hospital foundation - is the hospital church (1352) at the end of the northern market square, which the Gothic church, especially now after the third renovation, closes off in an extremely attractive way from an urban planning point of view. So today this church can rightly be counted among the sights and also among the landmarks of the city. Since time immemorial, the Hospital Church of the Holy Spirit has been part of the Gunzenhäuser Hospital founded by the knight Burkhard von Seckendorf in 1351 in honor of the Holy Spirit. Burkhard von Seckendorf probably took part in a pilgrimage to the Holy Land as a servant with his feudal lord, Burgrave Albrecht the Handsome, and was knighted in Jerusalem in the Holy Sepulcher Church, an award that was very coveted. In 1349 he acquired the town of Gunzenhausen from the Counts of Oettingen

On the picturesque market square of the old town of Gunzenhausen stands next to the historic buildings and the town hall a small, modern bell tower. He plays different tunes several times a day - maybe you can even guess the songs during a break in one of the restaurants on the square.

Dyer's Tower, Gunzenhausen

Highlight • Monument

The stately round tower from the 14th century was originally called Powder Tower after its use, as was Diebsturm, as it was once used as a powder magazine and prison. Its current name comes from a dye works that was operated at the foot of the tower.

Blasturm Gunzenhausen

Highlight • Monument

Presumably as a reminiscence of the "Wild Margrave", who once maintained one of the largest falconries in Europe, this kestrel sits enthroned here on the roof.
