Celtic Experience Trail

Highlight • Trail

The Celtic Adventure Trail leads you in the footsteps of the Celts in Franconia and southern Thuringia: 254 adventurous kilometers from the Werra over the Gleichberge and Haßberge, through the Main Valley and the Steigerwald to the Aischgrund.

A hike into prehistory - as a search for traces of a rediscovered European era and as an invitation to get to know the culture and nature of the regions along the way. Archaeological evidence, museums and scenic beauties can be discovered, seven mountains with magnificent views give the route a varied course. This brochure introduces you to the history of the Celts and the Celtic Adventure Trail with its stations and sights.

With the end of the funding program "Marketing the Celtic Adventure Trail", the Thuringian partners decided against further participation in the measures for the "Celtic Adventure Trail". Thus, the "Celtic Adventure Trail" in Thuringia (Meiningen to the Bavarian border) is no longer looked after for hiking tourism in the sense of quality management (route signage, etc.). We are currently holding talks with our Franconian partners (Steigerwald Tourism Association, Hassberge Nature Park Tourism Association) about the realignment of the project in the near future (integration of other Franconian areas, etc.). Thank you for your appreciation.

View of Meiningen

Highlight • Viewpoint

Meiningen is a district and cultural city in the Franconian south of Thuringia.
Meiningen has the function of a center and is the largest city in the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen.
It is the cultural and judicial center of South Thuringia and an important economic center of the region.
The fulfilling municipality of Meiningen has 27,844 inhabitants.
Meiningen is located on the Werra, has extensive parks and numerous classicist buildings in the city center.
The historic old town, still surrounded by the medieval moats of the former city fortifications, is characterized by an eclectic quarter and half-timbered buildings as well as town houses.
Meiningen was founded as a Franconian royal estate and was first mentioned in 982.
From 1008 it belonged to the Hochstift Würzburg for more than half a millennium and, due to its favorable location, soon developed into the most important city in today's southern Thuringia. It was able to maintain this position from 1583 as the administrative seat of the Henneberg region and from 1680 as the capital and residence of the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen until the 20th century.
The city was also known for a profound theater reform under Duke Georg II and a great heyday of the Meininger Hofkapelle under the leadership of well-known conductors such as Hans von Bülow and Max Reger.

New trails, and Buddy had to endure quite a bit.
No sniffing allowed.
I gave him a good run around the trail so we could get back to the shelter on time.
Of course, he also had his breaks...
Always a compromise between him and me.
