The lake was created as a reservoir in 1908 during the construction of the Schwentine hydroelectric power plants by shipyard founder Bernhard Howaldt and is now a fundamental part of the Schwentine Landscape Park. To create the reservoir, Bernhard Howaldt had to purchase land along the Schwentine River as far as the lands of Count Christian zu Rantzau (Rastorf Estate) and Preetz Monastery. The price per hectare at the time was approximately 2,000 marks. Raisdorf was first supplied with electricity in 1904 by the Raisdorf 1 hydroelectric power plant at the Rastorfer Mill. The Raisdorf 2 hydroelectric power plant followed in 1909. The power plants are now listed as historical monuments and are operated and maintained by Kiel's municipal utilities.

Schwentine Oxbow Nature Reserve Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Schwentine altar is a designated part of the Schwentine between Raisdorf and Klausdorf. It received this protection status, because the watershed remains close to nature because of its steep bank slopes and is habitat for a number of rare plants and animals. The area is 19 hectares in size. In addition to the course of the river, it also includes an old arm as well as a tributary brook, Knicks, herbaceous banks and hillside forests as well as small bodies of water. The Schwentine Valley, where the reserve is located, was formed by a chain of dead ice fields left behind after the last ice age. After thawing initially a chain of dammed lakes and after breakthroughs the current river valley of the Schwentine was formed.

View over the Schwentine Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

Slightly elevated vantage point with a great view of the Schwentine Valley. Here the river tends to overflow its banks when the water is high and flood the meadows.

Old Gatehouse at Preetz Abbey

Highlight • Monument

The former Benedictine convent with its church in Preetz is one of the most important cultural monuments in our region and a gem in the Plön district. It was founded in 1216 by Albrecht von Orlamünde in honor of the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist. Nuns of the Benedictine order, guided by the motto "ora et labora" (pray and work), led the convent to economic, intellectual, and cultural flourishing. Since the Reformation (1542), the convent has been owned by the Schleswig-Holstein knighthood, which transformed it into a women's foundation that still exists today, administered by the abbey council – the provost and prioress.

The Preetz Abbey is located 16 km southeast of Kiel in the Plön district, on the B76 – nestled in the idyllic Holstein Switzerland region.

The grounds of the Preetz Abbey are open to the public at all times – except for the abbey church, which can only be visited with a guided tour.

Shoemaker with Dog statue, Preetz

Highlight • Monument

The work of a shoemaker isn't so easy when your dog tries to steal your shoes and even the mice have made themselves at home in your workshop. With a cheerful image and a touch of humor, the detailed sculpture recalls the history of shoemakers in Preetz. Around 1850, the town boasted 150 independent master shoemakers, 360 journeyman shoemakers, and 160 shoemaking apprentices. In addition, there was a large number of clog makers.
