This well-known fountain commemorates the Backnang Goose War at the beginning of the 17th century. At that time, Backnang had a population of approximately 2,000. The poorer population, in particular, kept geese to alleviate their economic hardship. However, the Backnang authorities banned the keeping of geese because the animals caused considerable damage to the city's fields. The brave women of Backnang, however, put up a fearless resistance to this order, and with the help of Duke Johann Friedrich of Württemberg, they prevailed: In 1612, a Goose Ordinance was passed that permitted the keeping of geese again. The Goose Fountain was designed and constructed by Martin Kirstein in 1981. The Goose Market also takes place annually in Backnang, celebrating its 31st anniversary in 2017. A flock of geese then cackles and marches through the streets of Backnang, accompanied by appropriate music.

The Claque Bronze Sculpture by Guido Messer
