View of Cologne Cathedral from Mülheim Harbor

Highlight • Viewpoint

On the right bank of the Rhine in Mülheim, we walk along the Rhine promenade to the next photo spot, the small bridge popularly known as the "Katzenbuckel": It connects the port of Mülheim with the Rhine peninsula in the Rheinpark. At the highest point of the bridge we enjoy the magnificent view of the harbour, Rhine and Cologne Cathedral.

It is very nice to walk along the Rhine and enjoy the sun.

From the right bank of the Rhine you always have a wonderful view of the other bank and Cologne Cathedral. Especially in the immediate vicinity of the Hohenzollern Bridge and the train station Messe/Deutz. Unfortunately, there is always a lot going on in terms of cycling and you have to be a little careful. Still very nice.

Hohenzollern Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

One of Cologne's bridge connections between the city center on the left bank of the Rhine and Deutz on the so-called "Schääl Sick", which is often used by pedestrians. If you come from the Deutz side, you will notice that this bridge leads in a dead straight line towards the cathedral. Therefore, the railway trains have to take a sharp curve after passing the bridge to get to the main station. In terms of traffic technology, a slightly different route for the bridge would have been much more beneficial, but those "up there" (i.e. the Prussian rulers from the House of Hohenzollern, which gave the bridge its name) consciously wanted this straight axis towards the cathedral.

This hiking highlight refers to the equestrian statues in honor of the ruling Hohenzollern family - initially Prussian kings and later German emperors - which stand on both banks of the Hohenzollern Bridge named after them.
However, some of the photos show the equestrian statue on the Heumarkt - which is standing completely different - and can be easily distinguished from this one by the base with many figures.

Bastei Cologne

Highlight • Monument

The Bastei on the banks of the Rhine in Cologne's Neustadt-Nord district was built in 1923-1924 according to plans by Wilhelm Riphahn.
The Bastei is currently being extensively rebuilt and renovated by the city of Cologne. During construction work, the Bastei is closed and not available for events.
Status: December 2019
