History of the Hamlet of Winkel

Highlight • Historical Site

Information sign with the history of the hamlet of Winkel:
Early on - in 1102 - Winkel was mentioned in a document - as a hamlet in the Ufgau (Villa Winkele in pago Uffgowi). The designation "villa" indicates that Winkel must have been a larger settlement (village) at the time. In 1213 it is mentioned as Winckell, in 1214 as Winkil. By the year 1243 it must have gotten smaller because it is only called a village (villula Winkel). In the Berain (preliminary of the land register) from 1510, Hans Alp and Michael Stosser, in a document from 1593 Hans Mager, Hans Paar, Jonas Rummel and Jonas Stosser are named as residents. In 1683 Winkel counted five families. They were administered by a stadtholder of the entire municipality of Rotenfels. In 1772 10 families lived in Winkel, today there are probably around 150-200 inhabitants.

Winkler Hofstüble

Highlight • Restaurant

The Winkler Hofstüble has since been taken over by a Ukrainian couple. It remains highly recommended. Further information can be found at schwarzwald-tourismus.info/gastronomie/winkler-hofstueble-a845dad37d.

St. Sebastian's Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

The chapel of St. Sebastianus was built in 1752. There are two benches under the canopy. Unfortunately, it is not possible to visit the inside. You can see the interior through the windows. An information sign is attached to the church.
