Romäus Tower

Highlight • Monument

In the so-called Romäusturm, around 1497, the Villingen citizen - presumably landlord - Remigius Mans, known as Romäus, was imprisoned for insulting, but fled with the help of some citizens and subsequently earned a living as a mercenary. In 1513 he stayed on the Novara battlefield.
As little as there is well-founded knowledge about his life, the more fantastic legends entwine around his figure, which is said to have been gigantic and of extraordinary power.
A huge painting of the local hero from Villingen from the 16th century on the Romäusturm symbolized the defensive strength of the city, which is still surrounded by its city wall today. The painting, which had since peeled off, was replaced by a new one in 1981.
Today, the area around the tower up to the Franciscan Museum presents itself as a small park in which a gun ramp has been preserved, and the back of the houses in Rietgasse give the ensemble a medieval flair.
