The Rhenish-Hessian hill country, predominantly characterized by the Tertiary in the Cenozoic, is interrupted in the Aulheim Valley by volcanic rock from the Palaeozoic (Permian). The soft tertiary layers were eroded here by the Aulbach and the hard volcanic rock called andesite was exposed. The south-facing slopes warm up quickly, resulting in high temperatures like in the Mediterranean. As far as they are rocky and particularly steep, they could at most be used for sheep grazing. This is how dry grasslands were preserved there, which could only survive on such rocky slopes after the end of a warm period after the last ice age. Here you will find numerous rare plant species that otherwise only occur in the Mediterranean region and in the steppe areas of Southeast Europe: steppe grasses and plants that have adapted to sometimes extreme heat and drought. The dry grasslands of the Aulheimer Tal are supplemented by meager, semi-dry grasslands, which are home to numerous other rare plant species. This also applies to native orchids such as the purple orchid and the buck's belt tongue. The botanical richness of the Aulheim valley remained astounding to the experts and long hidden. It was only discovered around 1950. Since then, the Aulheimer Tal has been considered a botanical treasure trove.

Evangelical Parish Church Flonheim

Highlight • Religious Site

An imposing church in Flonheim.

Protestant parish church, built in 1882-85 in place of the Augustinian canons' collegiate church, preserves a floor covering of clay tiles of the old monastery church inside.

Catholic Church Badenheim

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Philip and James Church. The local lord, Count Eugen Erwin von Schönborn-Heusenstamm, had the church built between 1772 and 1775. His family coat of arms is still prominently displayed above the main portal with its beautiful Rococo door.

Looking around the corner at the south wall, one can see a sundial, which commemorates both the construction date of 1775 and the restoration in 1925.

The spacious interior is characterized by fine stucco work on the walls and ceiling, as well as outstanding Baroque furnishings. The highlight is the high altar, one of the most beautiful Baroque altars in the region.
