St. Johannis Chapel, Schnakenbek

Highlight • Religious Site

The first documented mention of the chapel in Schnakenbek was in the visitation report of 1581, but it is likely older. In 1854/55, the dilapidated little house of worship was replaced by the current building. At the end of World War II, the St. Johannis chapel was heavily damaged by artillery fire, but restoration work only took place between 1953 and 1957. Figures from a late Gothic carved altar were incorporated from the old chapel's furnishings, and were arranged in their current setting in the chancel in 1962.

The Elbe foreland is characterized by changing riverbanks, herbaceous meadows, and willow thickets. Near-natural softwood floodplains of purple willow and black poplar grow here. Many rare species, such as the river lamprey and the beaver, find their habitat here; in northern Germany, these species often occur exclusively in the Elbe glacial valley.

In addition to these natural treasures, the biosphere reserve also features a medieval rampart on the Old Salt Road, south of Schnakenbek. It once protected the Elbe crossing on the important trade route between Lübeck and Lüneburg. Today, you can still see the remains of the circular rampart.

You don't usually see beavers themselves, but it's obvious that they're hanging around here.

Beaver Pond "Grantplatz"

Highlight • Lake

Between the hiking trail and the Elbe there are a few small, untouched ponds where the beavers can work undisturbed.

There are several beaver information boards right on the hiking trail, which explain interesting details from the life of beavers here on the Elbe.

A great hiking trail leads right along the banks of the High Elbe. Due to the trees on the slope, the view is somewhat limited, but still beautiful.

A magnificent hiking trail that leads directly down along the banks of the Elbe and offers our four-legged friends many opportunities to cool off their paws. In several places the path is blocked by fallen trees, some of which have been there for a long time and have also been sawn up. But you can easily climb over them or just walk past them. That spices up the route. Anyway, we had a lot of fun

Also this Wednesday we hiked a loop.

We were 3 men and 6 women. As is well known, women are much more resilient and create (as a rule😁) a happy, harmonious group dynamic

From the start of Lauenburg ZOB we first went to the Fürstengarten, where you can enjoy wide views over the Elbmarsch at some vantage points.
Then down …
