Mural of Corporal Wojtek

Highlight • Monument

'Corporal Wojtek, a mural with a patriotic and historical theme. 120 sq m.

An incredible story of a brown bear taken in by Polish soldiers, between whom a friendly relationship was established.

The complex, large-scale project was a challenge, and the best reward during the dismantling of the scaffolding was the fact that there would be no corrections, which I had considered, and then I was delighted with the final effect. Fourteen days of constant painting in a non-profit formula, pure joy from the creative process' - Kruk

The Monument of Independence, unveiled in Pabianice on 12 November 1933, by M. Lubelski. This monument owes its creation to the numerous sacrifices of the Pabianice community, which wanted to commemorate the joyful fact of the liberation of the Homeland from the shackles of the occupiers and Bolsheviks in 1920. The monument was erected in the place where the insurgents, including many residents of the city, were quartered in the summer of 1863. In the same place on 10 December 1905, in a huge demonstration, the residents of Pabianice demanded freedom and independence, and in October 1914, the first unit of legionnaires stopped in Pabianice and Dąbrowski's Mazurka was played. In this place, the first Pabianice unit of the Polish army under the command of a Pabianice resident - Lieutenant Antoni Jankowski - swore an oath of allegiance to the Republic of Poland in December 1918. What did this monument look like? On its pedestal stood a vigilant legionnaire, at whose feet lay shattered border posts. On the walls, on the other hand, the face of Marshal Józef Piłsudski was placed, as well as the names of those Pabianice residents, called the Pabianice Eaglets, who gave their lives for the Fatherland in the years 1914-20. These were the names of fallen scouts, students, workers and intelligentsia. On November 15, 1939, the Germans blew it up as part of their fight against Polishness.

The regiment was formed in 1919 as the Bochnia Land Infantry Regiment. It fought in the Polish-Ukrainian and Polish-Bolshevik wars. It gained particular fame in the battle of Stepankowice.

On July 3, 1920, the regiment commander gave the regiment the nickname "Wolves" by his order.

In the interwar period, the Regiment was stationed in Dęblin and was part of the 28th Infantry Division. In the September Campaign, it fought as part of its parent division in the defense zone of the "Łódź" Army, and later in the defense of Modlin.
