Czorsztyn Castle

Highlight • Castle

The ruins of the Czorsztyn Castle are situated on a rock, approx. 50 m above the surface of the Czorsztyn Reservoir (originally approx. 95 m above the bottom of the Dunajec Valley). The erection of the fortifications on a hard-to-reach hill caused a natural increase in its defensive values. The oldest structures had the construction of a wooden and earth fortification founded in the 13th century. The founder of the watchtower was probably Princess Kinga - wife of Bolesław the Chaste. The stronghold was a barrier to the Hungarian colonization progressing to the north, as well as a center around which the settlement action was to be carried out. In this section, the Dunajec was not only the settlement border, but also the southern border of the state. Located in a bend in the river, the watchtower controlled the Via Magna trade and diplomatic route connecting Kraków and Buda, guarded the border between Poland and Hungary and served as a customs house. From the 15th century, it became the seat of the Czorsztyn starosty, a resting place for traveling monarchs and a safe haven during military operations. The driveway to the castle led from the north-west side.
